I woke up 7 plus am in the morning. Went into Ngee Ann Npal to check my results, I got 4As and 3Bs but my GPA did not score as well as the last semester. I better work harder for the Coming semester if not my results will sure get worse. In the morning I ate bread and study a bit of project management notes. My lesson starts at 2.10pm today, so I took a nap before I went for lesson.
The lesson today was interdisciplinary studies taught by local lecturer (Edith). The first topic was on Chinese culture; culture can be learned, shared, symbolized and adapting. In the olden days Chinese people use symbols, then it turn into characters. I also learnt about popular colours in china, red= good luck, positive. Yellow= noble. Purple= good future. White= sad, related to death. For plants, pineapple= longevity, Lotus= perseverance, Bamboo=fairness and honestly, Plum bloom= high hearted. For animals, in china culture, Black bird=bad luck, Magpie= good luck, Owl=evil, Cuckoo=Sadness, homesickness. Monkey= swift minded, smart. Ox= strong, hardworking. Horse= hardworking, bright future. Mouse=mean, coward. Tiger=Power, strength, king. Rabbit=tamed, coward.
Edith also taught us the way of complement in china. Some examples are, we seem to be bond in a close relation. Chinese people like to be regards as someone in a bond with each other. When doing business in china, having good capacity for liquor is one of the virtues of males in china. We can use words like, you really have good capacity for liquor/ you have drinking manner. For complement to the client, we can use words like, we certainly shall be benefited greatly in our cooperation. In china, relation-oriental, collective people think responsibility is always the proper reason.
When someone has benefited from the business, they will do in return. For complement to the aged, we can use words like you look so fine that you are likely to expect your 100th birthday or you deserve a long happy life. Another way of complement is, with nice dutiful kids around, you are living a gorgeous life. Being lonely is horrible, particularly to aged in China; living with their kids is happiness. One thing to take note when working in China was that we must not make complement to our partner’s wife directly and we must address counterpart with his title.
The last thing I learnt in today lesson was lucky numbers in china. Two= A good marriage, balanced life, is best to give present in pairs. Three= from legend (three kingdom), it means strength. Four= Reproductively. Six= related strategies by Sun bin, it means everything goes well. Eight= good future (fai cai) in Chinese. Nine= lasting, longevity. Ten= Perfect, complete.
After lesson, I tried something new for lunch today, it was a piece of bread called shi toh bing. The making of the bread was special; the person will make the dough flat and press it on to the side of a big pot. Few second later, he will take out the bread from the side of the pot and the piece of crispy bread is ready. For dinner, I ate noodles and my friend cook vegetables soup in their apartment so I ate some.
